Floriade Expo 2022: insglück stages ‘BIOTOPIA’, a journey of discovery into the green city of the future

With a biotope representing the utopian city of the future, the bidding consortium of insglück, gtp2 architekten and studio grüngrau Landschaftsarchitektur have been chosen to realise the German Garden at Floriade Expo 2022 in Almere, the Netherlands, with their ‘BIOTOPIA – Growing Community’ concept. The theme of this seventh international horticultural exhibition is ‘Growing Green Cities’. Germany’s entry is an engaging and appealing concept that invites people to embark on an inspiring journey into a new urban future.

The selection committee, comprising representatives of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), the Association of the German Trade Fair Industry (AUMA), the German National Garden Show (DBG) and Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH (HMC) as implementation company, chose the consortium’s entry for its compelling content and design.

„The garden and pavilion form a harmonious and aesthetically appealing whole that perfectly reflects the Floriade theme,” emphasised the Commissioner General for the German Garden, Dr Karl Wessels from the BMEL.

The German Garden playfully invites visitors to enter into dialogue on the opportunities and potential of green cities as places for meeting, participation and interaction.

The centrepiece of the German Garden is an open-sided wooden pavilion with a vibrant design featuring a green atrium. It symbolises a city that is continuously growing and changing. A two-storey, cuboid wooden structure with a roof garden, state-of-the-art solar panels, wind turbines and an intensively green facade runs around the perimeter of the 2,000m2 area of land. Inside the garden visitors encounter a species-rich biotope with trees, agricultural and ornamental plants, perennials and grasses that have proven resilient against climate change. The ensemble is rounded off by quiet zones, a stage presenting a varied cultural programme, a restaurant, as well as a trampoline and slide for kids and the young at heart.

“The German Garden will be a fresh, light and joyful place,” summarised Commissioner General, Dr Karl Wessels. “It will convey innovative and modern horticultural ideas to visitors in a fun way, without detracting from the seriousness of the issue. After all, the ecological transformation of our cities came about because of climate change, one of the biggest challenges facing mankind,” he continued.

The exhibition includes the bold scenographic elements of walk-in collages depicting visionary cityscapes for the visitors to explore. They show various German perspectives and innovations dedicated to cities of the future. Visitors are integrated into the multi-perspective and interactive scenarios, with themes, materials and communication channels to test and touch that appeal to all the senses. Wearing a smart bracelet, they collect theme-related icons, activate exhibits, ‘like’ ideas and initiate visible change. When they reach the last exhibit, and the end of the journey, they use the icons and ideas they have collected to bring their own very personal vision of a future city to life with virtual reality.

“We are absolutely delighted to have the winning entry. And we are proud that our bold and innovative concept will be representing Germany at Floriade Expo 2022,” said Detlef Wintzen, CEO of insglück and Creative Lead. “We all had a great time developing the creative concept. Making city living more sustainable, improving the quality of urban life and transforming our cities into more vibrant spaces is a future issue that we give a lot of thought to. A while back we set up an Urban Entertainment business unit as a framework for creating entertaining experiences at urban locations in the cities of the future,” continued Detlef Wintzen.

About the International Horticultural Exhibition Floriade Expo 2022

The Floriade Expo is a themed garden show, similar to the World Horticultural Exhibition, that has been held in the Netherlands once a decade since the 1960s. The venue for the 2022 expo, from 14 April to 9 October, is Almere. This time the theme is ‘Growing Green Cities’ and the aim is to raise global awareness for urban sustainability by presenting creative, green and sustainable solutions. Up to 100 national and international exhibitors are expected to take part in Floriade Expo 2022, transforming the approximately 60-hectare exhibition site into a district of Almere that will remain in place after the exhibition.

The BMEL is responsible for the German Garden at Floriade Expo 2022 in Almere. It has engaged HMC to implement the concept.
