BIOTOPIA – Growing Community
What will sustainable future cities look like? Reflecting the slogan of ‘Growing Green Cities’, Floriade Expo explored potential solutions for a greener urban future.
We designed a fun, eclectic and light urban vision and named it ‘BIOTOPIA – Growing Community’ an urban utopia promoting co-creativity, diversity and interaction. The role of the community was the central exhibition narrative – and BIOTOPIA positively encouraged active participation.
The German Garden represented a living ecosystem and a meeting space in a permanent process of genesis and growth. The architecture and exhibition elements formed a symbiotic unit, blended to create a top-quality and enjoyable overall experience.

Interactive exhibition
Talking plants and walk-in urban vision collages, or a periscope view of the underground world - plus fun interactive elements - communicated innovative solutions and best practice examples to the international audience in the four sub-themes of ‘Green’, ‘Food’, ‘Health’ and ‘Energy’.
Smart bracelets were used to collect theme-specific icons, activate exhibits, and ‘like’ ideas. In the final main show, the collected icons – representing the weighting of their interests – were transformed into a collaborative urban vision. The projection continuously changed to reflect the growing community.
Iconic architecture
The architecture was designed to be an unfinished city that provided space for nature. The pavilion had a sustainable, open-plan structure built with wood and glass in a cubist design that encouraged curiosity and fostered a spirit of discovery. The atrium symbolised an ecological fingerprint demonstrating how nature is reconquering the cities and reshaping open spaces.
